Thursday 10-12 GABF 04/ 252
Doing linguistic research on the basis of linguistic data calls for an adequate methodology of how to obtain, process and evaluate data and of how to exploit these data for the verification (or falsification) of hypotheses as parts of linguistic models or theories. The collection of useful data is not at all a simple task, therefore the course will aim at introducing, discussing and testing (if possible) various methods and tools employed in empirical work in linguistics. At the same time it will also consider some of the new findings and insights emerging from investigations of real-life speech and writing.
The following topics are planned to be covered: field methods, types of transcription, linguistics and the internet, online dictionaries, electronic corpora, types of data collection and research design, and statistics. Further issues may be included depending on the needs and wishes of the participants.
Requirements for credit points/Leistungsnachweis: presentation in class and written term paper
Enrolment: at GB 6/32 or via email: Martina.Dornieden@rub.de.
